Ambivalence of Identity: Cultural Traditions As a Theme in Contemporary Czech and Slovak Art

The dissertation focuses on the phenomenon of a new presence of references to traditional folk culture in contemporary Czech and Slovak art. Emphasis is placed on the period from the year 2000 to the present. The core of the work consists of chapters devoted to artists who in this period significantly thematized various aspects of traditional folk culture, either as a partial element of specific projects or in the form of continuous interest in the field. The essence of this part is to show the breadth and heterogeneity of the examined manifestations across the media spectrum. The main purpose of the work is to analyze and place the researched phenomena in a relevant context within the theory and history of art. The reason is their different nature from thematically similar manifestations in the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition, when compared with current trends abroad, a number of connections are shown, such as links to environmental issues, criticism of the state of society and, above all, to new issues related to personal and collective identification. Therefore, I base the analysis of these phenomena on a hybrid interdisciplinary basis using theoretical approaches to identity in the social sciences and humanities. I do so in the introductory theoretical chapters, but the main focus is on the final analytical synthesis. To a large extent, it also builds on data obtained from interviews with artists, the transcripts of which the reader will find in the appendix. Finally, the documentation of curatorial projects and exhibitions realized as a practical part of the dissertation project is attached.

Masculine Identity in Chuck Palahniuk's Early Novels

This MA thesis deals with the masculine identity of the three main male characters of Chuck Palahniuk's early novels Fight Club, Survivor and Choke. It consists of two parts. The first theoretical part briefly explores anthropological and sociological notions of masculinity, with the focus on the manhood in the contemporary USA. As such it serves as the theoretical basis for the second part of literary interpretation. There the masculine identity of the three main characters is discussed. As all the three characters experience the same development of masculine identity, the interpretation advances along this progress. Its stages are identity crisis, turning to the traditional male strategies, rejecting those strategies and searching the basis of one's identity in a personal relationship.

Psychological and social aspects of radicalization in case of Syria's jihadist foreign fighters

The aim of this thesis was to find out what role psychological and social factors play in the motivation of jihadist foreign fighters to leave for Syria. The sub-questions examine, on the one hand, how authors of the studies focused on motivation of foreign fighters work with the theoretical background and concepts related to the psychosocial sphere, their interpretation of the key concepts and motivation of foreign fighters and, on the other hand, what psychosocial motivation to leave for Syria prevails in existing studies. In order to answer these questions, I chose several theoretical models of radicalization that work mainly with the psychological and social dimension of the problem.Subsequently, I chose several main psychosocial categories and narratives to analyse the studies, with the possibility of new categories occurring. I was particularly interested in existential motivation such as search for meaning or the identity crisis, in the case of jihadists also connected with the ideology and the influence of social groups. Based on the analysis, I found out that the theoretical basis, the specific definitions of individual key concepts and the logic of the interpretation of the respondents' words in the majority of the studies are missing or not fully described. Question of Identity in The Impressionist and Baumgartner' s Bombay

This diploma thesis aims to depict the nature of identity formation in the main characters of two works of postcolonial literature, Hari Kunzru's The Impressionist and Anita Desai's Baumgartner's Bombay. The concept of identity is approached from two perspectives, the traditional and the postcolonial one. Apart from that, the reactions of the two characters to their identity crises are scrutinized. The goal of this thesis is to determine what consequences the extreme implementation of a fluid, therefore ideal postcolonial identity, and the fixed one, as its extreme opposite, might have upon human lives. Special attention is paid to the three terms crucial in the postcolonial theory, liminality, hybridity and mimicry and how they predetermine the characters of the two novels. The analysis shows that neither extreme approach proves to be viable or beneficial for the life of an individual.

Analysis of the work of Romain Gary

Title of the thesis: Analysis of the work of Romain Gary Keywords: dialogue, motiv of meeting, morality of relationship, identity, crisis of identity, alienation, symbology, "unspeakableness" (impossibility to expresse an experience having an intime or an extreme character), novel, figure of "the third", Jewry Abstract: The principal objective of this thesis is to show the ideological relationship between the ideas of Romain Gary, the french writer of Russian origin, and the philosophy of dialogue, that was founded by Martin Buber and elaborated by Emmanuel Lévinas. We want to reach this aim on the one side through the interpretation and the confrontation of the several philosophical thoughts and on the other side through the analysis of the novel work. This thesis is separated into four main chapters. In the first head we try to approach the effect of the economic development and the all-society transformation, that France passed through at the turn of the 19th and 20th century and especially after the First World War, that it had on the cultural life and the philosophical atmosphere. Men´s identity in modern society

This thesis is concerned with the men and their identity in modern society. Introductory chapter is dealing with issue of male identity, its evolution from childhood, and finding the heart of today's crisis, as many call it. Further it makes us acquainted with the areas of family, employment and society, and with the roles and status of male sex there. The main aim of the thesis is to present a picture of a man in various spheres of life and his male identity. I was interested how men themselves cope with new roles and demands that society and women poses on them. The part of thesis is empirical research that occupies with the attitudes of men and women to their traditional family and working roles that are influenced by persisting gender stereotypes.
